How many across the nation have cancelled seasons in previous years? As populations wax and wane, I would expect a small number of high schools in small towns cancel seasons every year. That said, I notice none of the reported schools are in Texas. Texas does love it some Friday Night Lights.

This. I have lived in or around small towns all my life in the upper midwest, and every year there are stories about a school or two cancelling their season for these reasons. A dozen nationwide? That doesn't sound out of line at all.

We've had at least 19 or around there cancel this year just in our state. Mostly smaller schools but participation numbers and health reasons (see jab thread) and it's definitely higher this year.

Lots of ****er cheap shot artists in football, but that's in another thread at GIM2.

Back in the 1980s schools across NY cancelled lots of sports due to skyrocketing insurance costs.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is the same culprit again with insurance companies raising premiums to cover themselves against young athletes dropping dead from COVID vaccine side effects on the field and the litigation and payouts associated with such unfortunate incidents. In short, I think the insurance companies see lots more dead young people in the near to mid term future.

School districts are probably reluctant to pay the premiums and at the same time blame the insurance companies since it’s a very small niche market. Become a problem district and you will pay higher premiums for years.

.

A little over 100 years ago when T.R. was president he told the colleges to make the game safer or he'd ban the game, they were having a lot of injuries & deaths. That's around the time the first helmets came out.

instead of covid lunacy -- if (they) really cared about student well-being they would cancel all sports that interest/draw thug life. the violence/injuries in football/basketball far FAR exceed the covid injuries. shootings, brawls, violent surprise attacks, etc......we could fill up this thread with news items about them

be sure and wear your makks -- but dont care about getting kicked in the head while laying on the ground from a sucker punch
