The autoplay function for external storage devices stopped working.

1. Reset all defaults.
2. Clicked on Autoplay everything in Setting and Devices.
3. Can only access external devices by going thru This Computer.
4. It was working fine, but now I need to manually open USB devices.
5. How can I get my computer back to virgin selecting defaults without losing data?

Have you tried any of this?

This is what Uncle Billy says to try.

1. Check AutoPlay Service: Ensure the AutoPlay service is running. Open Services (search services.msc), find Shell Hardware Detection, and make sure it’s set to Automatic and is running.

2. Registry Check:
• Press Win + R, type regedit, and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
• Look for a value named NoDriveTypeAutoRun. If it exists, set its value to 91 (hexadecimal) or 145 (decimal).

3. Reset Default Apps: Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps, and reset all default apps to their original settings.

4. Check for Group Policy Changes:
• Open the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).
• Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > AutoPlay Policies and ensure that Turn off AutoPlay is set to Not Configured.

5. Test with a New User Account: Sometimes, user-specific settings may cause issues. Create a new user account and test AutoPlay there.

This is what Grok said when I asked it:

Don't ya just love Windoze?

I'd make sure you backed up your data.

Multiple backups (more than just one) is the rule.

My recommendation is get a Mac... and I used to work on PC's!

I did a system restore and got back the autoplay function. I think either a Windows update or OS optimizer removed the registry key. It appears many businesses like to shut it down to reduce the risk of malware.
