If approved, weekday trading will start 2 1/2-hours earlier and end 3 1/2-hours later

The trading day for stocks isn't 24 hours, but it's going to be pretty close if the New York Stock Exchange gets its way.

Intercontinental Exchange Inc.'s (ICE) NYSE said Friday that it plans to extend its weekday trading on its fully electronic NYSE Arca Equities exchange to 22 hours, from the current 16 hours.

Subject to regulatory approval, NYSE said trading for all listed stocks, ETFs and closed-end funds would start at 1:30 a.m. Eastern and end at 11:30 p.m.

Currently, the NYSE Arca Equities' trading hours are 4 a.m. to 8 p.m.
