In this week’s episode I talk about the DXing programme Wavescan and where you can find its podcasts now, the new African DX report on Wavescan, South African radio awards, Saint FM from St Helena returning to the airwaves, and there is news about the fate of stations that are currently using the Moosbrun antenna in Austria which is set to close at the end of the year. I also have a reception report from Sebastian in Germany, news about the Tecsun PL-680 and I end with the propagation forecast.

Short wave reception on a Swiss Autophon E-627 military receiver​

This is a short video of the Autophon E-627 receiver in operation.
Autophon was a small company based in Solothurn, Switzerland, which made wonderful everyday household appliances, such as telephones and radios. They manufactured a number of other electronic devices, for instance a very small radio transmitter for skiers and mountain-goers that would automatically start sending a signal should you be trapped under the snow in the event of an avalanche.
But what we have before us today is something different, and equally wonderful. It is a military receiver model E-627, made in 1951 for the Swiss Army.
It is quite amazing how well it works 73 years later, in December 2024, when I am listening in to the shortwaves in a cold and sunny morning in Madrid, Spain.

When I first got this radio some time ago, I never thought that so many months later, I'd be covering it again. Well, The folks over at Choyong simply couldn't resist the idea that a great radio can always be better. This latest update (4.7) adds enhanced Voice search, Category search, and PODCASTS! Not just a few, but 10's of Thousands and growing. I continue to be amazed at what they can do with this cool radio.

Hi there, what a great signal from the other side of the world...it never gets old listening to DX on shortwave. Credit to Radio New Zealand Pacific for supporting the Pacific small island states via the medium of shortwave.
Recorded in Oxford UK on 28/01/25 at 09:00 hrs UTC, using an Icom IC-R8600 and a Wellbrook ALA1530 magnetic loop antenna via a Bonito/NTi AntennaJet RF splitter and a GI1000 galvanic isolator.
