Interesting.

Given the fog over the collapse of the Syrian government (which unlike the fog of war, seems likely to thin in the coming week or so), it seemed useful to provide concrete information on one element of how Syria got where it was and what might happen next: the massive exodus of its population. Syria went from a pre-war population of about 22 million to its current level. Various official sources, presumably using data supplied by Syria, have estimated it at around 23 million in 2023.1 That does not seem credible in light of the level of flight, which again from official sources which would not have a propensity to overstate, exceeds 10 million, as we will unpack below.

I found him. Where’s my 10 million?

If Syria wasn’t a Deep State operation with a foregone conclusion, why did the rebels already have the new Syrian flags ready to hang all over the place?

The Collapse of Syria and the Axis of Resistance

Tectonic Geopolitical Consequences
The term 'shock and awe' doesn’t even begin to describe it. The fall of Damascus to rebranded terrorists - with western support and so quickly – is a world historic event. The Middle East has been fundamentally reordered. The Resistance has essentially collapsed.

Report to Congress on Syrian Regime Change

December 10, 2024 9:11 AM

From the report

Rapid offensives by Syrian armed groups opposed to the government of Bashar Al Asad (alt. Assad) forced Asad’s resignation and exile to Russia on December 8, 2024. This inflection point in Syria’s post-2011 civil war marked the end of decades of Asad-family rule.

Advances since late November by anti-Asad groups left much of western Syria (including Damascus and most other major cities,) in the hands of different forces: a coalition led by the U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Hay’at Tahrir al Sham (HTS), the Turkey-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) coalition, and southern Syria-based armed groups. Groups (including Alawite minorities) with historical ties to the Asad regime maintain a presence in some western coastal areas where Russian air and naval bases are located. Eastern Syria remains largely under the control of the U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the U.S.-backed Syrian Free Army, both U.S. counterterrorism partners against remnants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) that once dominated parts of Syria and Iraq.

Apparently, the USA launched a huge bombing and missile campaign while israel invaded...oh well, another tar pit for some poor saps to play in.

But Syria and a lot of other countries in the middle east were absolute shit hole toilets long before we ever showed up

How arrogant. If you want to talk about shitholes don’t talk about past Syria. Talk rather about Memphis and San Francisco. Syrians enjoyed a level of safety which americans dream of.

Syria had a substantial, widespread college population. Syrian migrants are better educated than migrants from other regions, that’s why they integrate themselves easier.

Unlike americans Syrians didn’t need health insurance because healthcare was free. Bad level you say. Well sometimes bad is better than nothing isn’t. Besides it wasn’t worse than in many other developing countries, and surely better than 3rd world.

42 millions of people live on food stamps. It has been over 40 millions since 2010.
You want to talk about shitholes then talk about New Mexico having 25% of the state population on food stamps.
The day the $ becomes a currency like any other and the world isn’t forced anymore to subsidize your public debt - a day that can’t come quickly enough - let’s see what happens with that 42 millions figure and then let’s talk again about shitholes.

Syria was a developing country.
There wasn’t widespread wealth but no pauperism either. Markets and bazars were full or merchandise. Inexpensive food. Much better fruits and vegetables than you can find in the standard us grocery store.
It was 2nd world. Calling a 2nd world country a shithole is stupid because if you call it shithole how are you going to call 3rd world countries.
Well it was a muslim country so no freedom you say.
Syria was one of the most liberal societies in the muslim emisphere.

Growing economy, modernisation, gov supported liberalisation, foreign investments pouring in, lower inflation rate than what most european countries had in the 70s. Yes but life was hard for most of the population you say.
Yes, that’s why they call them developing countries.

Then your government started with the sanctions.

There you go Johnny. This is not Al-Bashar-Al-Assad News Corporation. This is wikipedia.
Educate yourself before calling other countries shitholes.

Between 1990 and 2010 it was 20 years of uninterrupted growth. A success story. Syria was considered as an example within the arab world. Calling it a shithole is either ignorant or dishonest.
Your government and their allies crippled that booming economy.
Then you financed and armed terrorists groups destabilizing Syria.
Then your military entered Syria.
Since then you have been stealing their oil, Syria’s major source of income.

Until 2011 Syria wasn’t a shithole. It was a thriving country. You made it a shithole. And asking people to explain why uncle sam should be held responsible for Syria’s destruction is called trolling.

Hey @Peter89 - Your posts 59, 60 and 61 are the answer I was looking for. Thanks.

Like I said.........I was looking for a reason for your statement. And some of what you posed seems to coincide with this:

Now the thing of it is - the article paints the US and the west in a bad light, and I simply don't know how true it is due to the anti-western bias. But I do have a little understanding as to your post.

Satellite Photos Show Russian Navy Exodus From Syria, Syrian Missile Boats Sunk at Pier

December 10, 2024 5:44 PM

New satellite photos from the Tartus naval base on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea show Russian Navy ships anchored off the coast of Syria after abandoning Moscow’s only overseas naval base. Photos also show the destruction of Syrian Navy missile boats at the in Latakia.

According to photos from satellite provider Maxar, three Russian Navy guided-missile frigates and at least two support ships were in port in Tartus on Dec. 5. On Tuesday, those ships had left port and at least two of the Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates were operating off the coat of Syria. The base had been home to two Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, an Admiral Grigorivich-class frigate and an improved Kilo-class attack boat, according to Naval News.

Some of the replies to this are pretty neat. YMMV.

(The 2-3 years slight downturn was caused - surprise surprise - by sanctions adopted by the EU in 1986.)

The Assad family ruled Syria from 1971, when Hafez al-Assad became president under the Ba'ath Party.
Hadn’t it been the Assad family the world had celebrated Syria's political class of this period as an example of illuminated government.
Basically Syria experienced 40 years of uninterrupted growth.

Until 2011 Syria has been a major success story, a case to be studied in macroeconomy classes.
40 years of uninterrupted growth.

Here you have the same chart but using constant dollars i.e. considering inflation.

Extrapolate from that chart and imagine what’d be Syria today.

How dishonest must be one in order to call pre-war Syria a shithole toilet.
How hypocrite must be an american dismissing pre-war Syria as a shithole toilet in order to downplay the responsability his country.

I would if I were Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi, Afghanistan, and probably 4 other countries...

One of these days our involvement in the middle east will come to bite us in the ass. Of this, I am sure.

I was behing thecwheel of a diesel truck in FL drinking a cup of 7-11 coffee in a foam cup when I heard of the first Iraqi invasion. I thought it was crazy then.

I'm betting Biden/Netanyahu bribed the Syrian military to walk off the job...several billion would be cheap to buy off a country's military...

Well, that's another government we have overthrown...
Another one for the Color Revolutionaries! Fat Vicky Nuland LIVES!

All that's left, is complete meltdown, and a sudden flow of millions of "refugees" - to a city near YOU.
