Titanic-Wreck Tour Charging $250,000 a Guest Has Gone Missing

(Bloomberg) -- A diving craft from a company that charges $250,000 for tours of the Titanic shipwreck has gone missing in the North Atlantic with five people aboard.

“Our entire focus is on the crew members in the submersible and their families,” OcenGate Expeditions, which runs underwater vessels for charter and scientific exploration, said in a statement Monday. “We are working toward the safe return of the crew members.”

OceanGate offers 10-day expeditions to the Titanic site providing “qualified explorers” the opportunity to join as mission specialists, who pay fees to underwrite their training and participation with the science teams exploring the legendary ship that sank in 1912 on its maiden transatlantic voyage after hitting an iceberg. The guests pay a quarter-million dollars, according to the New York Times, which first reported the rescue operation.

Inside the missing submarine that explores the Titanic — each ticket worth $250K

It’s a race against time to locate the tourist submarine that went missing on Monday as it explored the remnants of the doomed Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean.

Naval experts say the wreckage is in such a position that it will be a “difficult” recovery mission.

Operated by OceanGate Expeditions, the submarine, known as the Titan submersive, holds only up to five people.

“It’s very worrying. It could have become entangled in the wreckage of Titanic, we don’t know yet. The wreck site is a long way from anywhere,” Former Rear Admiral Chris Parry said during an appearance on Sky News.

“The only hope one has is that the mothership will have a standby craft that can investigate immediately what is going on.”

So what anti-big pharma person was on this sub? Or was this another Hillary job?

There are foolish rich people, too.

This is akin to Space-tourism seats. Also, reminiscent of that Teacher-In-Space when the Shuttle blew up.

I saw the nooze linky...of a short description of that sub. It's an experimental titanium CAN.

It's there to make goo-gobs of money, off fools with money to burn and some voyeuristic obsession with the Titanic.

Frankly, I'm not sure it's much of a loss to the world, that these people have gone the way that the people they wanted to gawk at, went.

Wouldn't you think it would have the ability to surface on it's own?

I heard that the thing has 7 different systems to do just that. One of 'em works even if everyone on board is incapacitated.

Submersible Titan, Titanic and Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) | Are Submersibles Regulated?

Jun 20, 2023

In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - maritime historian at Campbell University (@campbelledu) and former merchant mariner - discusses the situation regarding the missing and overdue submersible Titan diving on the wreck of RMS Titanic as of June 20, 2023, and the regulations and rules regarding the classification of the submersible Titan. The loss of Titanic in 1912 led to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention in 1914; which established many of the safety measures and enforcement rules used on international shipping today.

From the link:

The Navy and U.S. Transportation Command are sending salvage equipment to help find a submersible that went missing while trying to travel to the wreck of RMS Titanic, the Coast Guard announced Tuesday.

The U.S. Coast Guard set up a unified command Monday that brings together the U.S. and Canadian coast guards, the U.S. Navy and the Canadian armed forces to coordinate rescue efforts. The unified command is working with the U.S. Navy and TRANSCOM to determine which naval assets to send, Capt. Jamie Frederick said during a First Coast Guard District news conference Monday.

“This is a complex search effort, which requires the use of subject matter expertise and specialized equipment,” Frederick said. “While the U.S. Coast Guard has assumed the role of search and rescue mission coordinator, we do not have all of the necessary expertise and equipment required in a search of this nature. The unified command brings that expertise and additional capability together to maximize effort in solving this very complex problem.”

Forget submersibles. A true submarine is what ya want.

Goes to 13,000', and they have one that can go to 36,000'. Pressure tested to 45,931'

I winder if it was a staged vanishing act... or aliens.

I heard that the thing has 7 different systems to do just that. One of 'em works even if everyone on board is incapacitated.
Well, as Sal, the guy with the channel above (can't spell his name and don't want to go to the channel just for that) points out...they could BE on the surface, liberated of their weights, and be unable to come out.

Because they're bolted in. There is no escape hatch and no provision for any ventilation.

I expect there's gonna be a LOT of lawsuits filed later over THAT.

They ALSO don't have any emergency transponder. If their radio is dead, and obviously it is...they have NO way to call for help or signal.

It probably imploded and they never felt it.

From what I've read it appears that this sub has made other trips down to the Titanic. However, it probable meant that the company has made other trips and not this particular vessel. I know that an implosion probably relates to maintenance issues. I wonder what those logs show. If there was another vessel available why wasn't the vessel sent down as soon as it was reasonable to do so?

This type of tourism isn't inherently safe. Dangers do exist. Hope for the best but time is running out.

Can't believe that there is an emergency transponder or back up radio. If this is true how can a reasonable person let this happen without knowing that there is a potential problem. Casey this is going to be a feeding frenzy for lawyers. More chum please.

According to what I'd read, the pressure inside the vessel remains as at sea level.

No need to decompress. The worst thing that would happen, with a sudden bob upright, is that acceleration might cause fainting, and once coming to the surface, everyone would literally bounce off the ceiling, the top part of the vessel.

THAT could create life-threatening injuries. But not pressure. If the can burst, that's another issue, but this guy doesn't sound like he knows any facts.

Supposedly, the sub is run via a $30 logitech game controller.

Guy in the vid says it's got a bunch of bad reviews on amazon, with people complaining about it losing connection.

For $30, they shoulda got a backup.

If somehow they are found alive, I wonder if the customers will want a refund?

Well, they're banging on the hull. Sonar is receiving it.

They haven't spotted the can, yet. Partly because it's titanium, which is non-ferrous, non-magnetic and doesn't show up on many scanning tools.

I doubt that. The view port was rated to 1300 meters. They were going to 4000 meters. They're pink mist floating in the ocean now. The CEO was one of those diversity hire guys. Didn't want any 50 year old "white" guys on his team. Well RIP. If there is banging then it's that dummy downn there banging his head on the wall because of his stupidity.

The government should save the taxpayers money and send everyone home because these people were beyond irresponsible.

Yeah, just abandon it. Because, reasons.

"Rated for" is not the same as "it blows up at." I grant that going deeper is reckless. I grant that doing it routinely, is criminal negligence.

That doesn't mean that at 1301 meters it goes bang. Nor does it mean that a RECOVERY effort has to be stopped.

Imagine, you're in the basement of your home when a gas appliance blows up, upstairs, and the remains of the house burn down. You're under a workbench, and all right, but trapped.

Do you want the EMS people to just give up after two days, and start bulldozing you? Tear you in half, when an excavator digs into the foundation to clear everything?

Watch this. These people on that thing are reckless. They are no one's obligation to save..RIP

A would-be crew member backed out due to safety concerns.
...but he won't detail what those safety concerns were.

This guy says that when he went in that sub, they only tightened 17 of the 18 bolts on the lid to the thing. Was told the 18th one wasn't so important. Lol

He was invited along in order to document the dive, but it was aborted at 37' due to some type of malfunction. I bet he's happy about that now.

Who you gonna sue when this happens? Do they even have an insurance policy? You would think the insurance company would be all over the safety insp[ections before insuring anything. Or, maybe there was no insurance and they all signed a waiver of liability. At over 2 miles down I would be surprised if they can ever get that thing back. It's not like it's 20 feet deep and a diver can go do a hookup with a cable.

Debris field found in search area. CG will hold presser around 3. Unfortunately, I believe we may be coming to a sad close.

One of the Pakistanis had curry before they submerged and blew it up at 4,000 feet down.

Diversity - when you don't really need the very best.

OceanGate Expeditions CEO Stockton Rush, who is aboard the missing submersible, once explained why he preferred not to hire "50-year-old White guys" with military experience to pilot his company's vessels.

Rush said he valued captains who were "inspirational" over experience, noting that "anybody can drive the sub," which is controlled with a $30 video game controller.

The bad news is that they are all dead. The good news is that their DEI scores are off the charts. :ROFLMAO:

Maybe he should have hired the Bud Light transvestite to pilot it.
