S&P 500, Dow hit records, boosted by bank earnings surprise​

  • JPMorgan, Wells Fargo rally after Q3 results

Oct 11 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 and the Dow scored record closing highs on Friday, with the big boosts from financial stocks after banks reported strong quarterly results while the latest inflation data fueled expectations for a U.S. Federal Reserve rate cut in November.

Major financial companies kicked off earnings season with JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), opens new tab finishing the session up 4.4% after the lender reported higher-than-expected third-quarter profit and raised its annual interest income forecast.

Morning Bid: Bank results boost Wall St, China plan leaves questions​

Oct 14 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets.

As the trading week begins in Asia, Chinese stocks are coming off several days of retrenchment while U.S. equities keep churning higher.
Wall Street's main indexes ended with gains on Friday. The benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab stood at record-high levels after logging its fifth-straight week of gains.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), opens new tab and Wells Fargo (WFC.N), opens new tab shares jumped after both major banks beat profit estimates, a bullish kick-off for corporate America's third-quarter reporting season. The two lenders also touted resiliency of the U.S. consumer, which will be in focus in the coming week of earnings and retail sales data.

With U.S. Treasury markets closed on Monday, Wall Street stocks are set to cruise on higher into the unfolding corporate earnings season - but may first have to take early direction from China's weekend stimulus update.

The Colombus Day holiday closes Federal offices and the bond market but the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq remain open and stock futures are higher first thing, building on the S&P500's (.SPX), opens new tab latest charge to new record highs.

SAO PAULO, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Brazil's foodie hub Sao Paulo may be best known for its prized cuts of grilled meat and lavish sushi spreads, but some upscale restaurants are featuring a novel star ingredient: soy.

The agricultural powerhouse is the world's top producer of soy, shipping over a million tons a week to China on average.

But unlike in Asia and other markets where soy is synonymous with cheap everyday protein, Brazilians eat so little of it that it has become a pricey niche offering.

S&P 500, Dow notch record closing highs, crude slumps​

NEW YORK, Oct 14 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended higher with a boost from technology shares amid light Columbus Day trading on Monday, while crude prices dipped as investors parsed signs of economic softness in China and girded themselves for a string of high-profile corporate earnings.

Megacap tech-adjacent growth stocks provided much of the upside muscle, putting the Nasdaq out front.

The S&P 500 and blue-chip Dow both nabbed fresh record closing highs.

The U.S. bond market returns from holiday to find Wall Street stocks soaring ever higher to new records, with Big Tech and Big Banks stirring earnings season excitement even as China's markets turn tail on demand worries and stimulus doubts.

The S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab and the Dow Jones (.DJI), opens new tab posting fresh record finishes, with the former rapidly homing in on 6,000 after a 22% rise for the year so far and the Dow closing above 43,000 for the first time.
