THE ORIGINAL SUV | 1963-1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer | Comfy, Cushy, Capable!
Mar 12, 2024
The thought of a do-it-all offroad rig usually falls short when it comes to combining capability and luxury with room for six. The one vehicle that did it from 1963 to 1991 is the subject of this episode of Hemmings Tested 4x4; the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
Built during its lifetime by four different manufacturers, the Grand Cherokee stayed true to capability for its entire run with solid axles front and rear and offered uncommon luxury and passenger space. While it was originally marketed as a station wagon, the Grand Wagoneer replaced the Willys wagon and became the longest-running vehicle of its era.
So whether you are building a capable off-roader, a luxury throwback to drive to Cars & Coffee, or an overlanding adventure vehicle, the Grand Wagoneer checks all of those boxes with retro styling.

The Motor Underground: Chinatown Confidential | Episode 1
May 16, 2024 #hotrod #vintage #classic
Dan Stoner, Hemmings Creative Director, and underground car culture digger, has been hearing a rumor about a mysterious ’56 Chevy gasser called “The Underdog” that ran the streets of Chinatown in San Francisco for as long as he’s lived in the city. But nobody knew where it was or had ever seen the car in person.
So, it was time to put the legend to the test. Was it a real car? Were Chinese kids the first to run gassers on the street 50 years ago? And what was the fate of the Underdog? To answer all these questions, he first must go Underground to understand the most mysterious neighborhood on the West Coast: CHINATOWN…

The Motor Underground: Chinatown Confidential | Street Gassers: Built, Not Bought
May 23, 2024 #hotrod #vintage #hemmings
Eating, drinking, and walking through the streets of the oldest Chinatown in America starts to pay off in Stoner’s quest to find the mysterious “Underdog” ’56 Chevy Gasser: word starts to spread that he’s poking around and the American Born Chinese who built, raced, and lived their lives in straight-axle Gassers come out of the shadows to reveal their stories.
He also finds the hotrodder whose shop put the axles under these cars and gets a nuts-n-bolts lesson on how a gasser was built for the street when everything was built, not bought.

The Motor Underground: Chinatown Confidential | Episode 3 | Secrets & Lost Innocence
May 30, 2024 #hemmings #classiccars #chinatown
In his search for a wicked gasser that ran the streets of Chinatown half a century ago, Stoner uncovers a story made for Hollywood: street gangs, secretive Chinese tongs, high school kids building choppers, and a network of city gas stations where Chinese kids built some of the first street-driven gassers ever seen. But it all came to a screeching halt when a mafia-stye shooting took place at a beloved Chinatown restaurant in 1977. And just as he was about to give up the search for the Underdog, Stoner is stopped dead in his tracks when a mysterious email shows up in his inbox…

Public roads, though many of the roads we took were identified as "minimum maintenance". Mostly field access, but all public.
We had a steak supper after Friday's drive, so there was plenty of BSing going on. Most of us know a lot of the others through various shows and clubs. I'm pretty confident that this crew would not be interested in camping.Interesting outing.
I've been on group rides with small (200cc) dual-sport motorcycles, but this gives new meaning to "slow."
Are they camping out somewhere? What a way that would be to really tie the group together, build the mood...bring all the hardware in a circle, put up backpacker tents and a fire pit in the center. Hot food, good stories, and various cold or hot beverages as the sun goes down.
