Easy Balance Exercises for Stability and Strength for All Ages | Dr. Mandell

Jun 13, 2024

Maintaining good balance becomes increasingly essential for overall health and well-being. Balance exercises play a crucial role in enhancing stability, coordination, and spatial awareness, which can significantly reduce the risk of falls—a leading cause of injury among older adults. These exercises strengthen the core muscles, improve posture, and help in maintaining mobility and independence. Moreover, regular practice of balance activities can boost confidence, encourage a more active lifestyle, and even have a positive impact on mental health by reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of achievement. Incorporating balance exercises into your routine can also complement other forms of physical activity, ensuring a holistic approach to fitness that supports healthy aging. Whether it's through yoga, tai chi, or simple balance drills, prioritizing these exercises can pave the way for a safer, more dynamic, and enriched life as we grow older.

A few random thoughts.

-Nursing homes and rehabs are woefully understaffed.
- Spending time in these places as an observer / visitor and you'll learn about and see selfless acts of kindness and patience every day.
- If you are interested in agility, dexterity, movement and exercise physiology you can learn all sorts of things you can incorporate into exercise routines. You'll see how using simple things found in every home can be used in different exercises. If you spend any time in a rehab facility observe how the therapists deal with patients, the equipment they use and movements they have their patients do. And don't be afraid to ask questions. The only dumb question is the one not asked.
- You can learn about different equipment, gadgets and gizmos that you can use in your house to help injured or elderly live better and make things easier on themselves. You can also learn how to buy this stuff so it won't break the bank.

- If you are helping someone through their final chapter, this may be of some help. I know the author.

Here's an exercise routine for those who may be chair bound or have balance issues. Seen some of this in person at a senior rehab in the past three months, it works.

Increase Leg & Foot Circulation and Blood Flow in Minutes! Dr. Mandell

Utilizing a towel as a simple yet effective tool can significantly enhance foot and leg circulation, particularly after a rigorous workout session. Following a day filled with exercises that engage the lower body, a towel can be employed for gentle stretching and massaging, which can help alleviate discomfort and promote better blood flow. To begin, you might sit comfortably on the floor or on a chair or sofa, draping the towel around the arch of your foot while holding the ends. Gently pulling the towel towards you will provide a safe stretch for the calf muscles and Achilles tendon, aiding flexibility and circulation. This stretch not only helps in loosening tight muscles but also encourages venous return, reducing the risk of developing varicose veins and minimizing swelling in the ankles and feet.

Additionally, incorporating rhythmic movements with the towel can further enhance circulation. For instance, you can perform a "towel scrunch," where you place a towel on the floor and use your toes to scrunch it up towards you. This exercise engages the small muscles in the feet, stimulating blood flow and strengthening foot muscles, thus promoting overall leg health. Using the towel as a prop in various exercises, such as leg extensions or lateral leg raises, can facilitate a greater range of motion and improve circulation in the legs. By engaging in these practices regularly, you not only support your muscle recovery post-workout but also cultivate a habit that promotes long-term circulation health, helping to keep your legs feeling light and energized! Remember, integrating such mindful practices into your routine can significantly impact your overall well-being, helping to prevent discomfort and enhance the vitality of your lower extremities.

Do People in ‘Blue Zones’ Actually Live Longer?

The concept is simple and alluring: There are special regions around the world — called blue zones — where people regularly remain vibrant and active into their 90s and 100s, thanks to a simple set of behaviors that anyone can follow.

It’s sensible enough to sound convincing, and ambiguous enough to support a health and longevity empire. In the 20 years since blue zones were first introduced, the Blue Zones brand (now trademarked) has spawned eight books, a Netflix series, product partnerships (Langers Blue Zones iced tea, Bush’s Blue Zones canned bean soups) and a multimillion dollar program for other cities to become “Blue Zones certified” — all in the name of helping people attain their longevity goals, ostensibly by mimicking the lifestyle habits of the individuals living in each region.

I don't agree with the idea that these short exercise breaks are as effective as a 20-minute walk, but they are good for anyone who is older and doesn't get too much physical activity.

10 micro-exercises that are as effective as a 20-minute walk

A new study has found that squeezing in a few ultra-short micro-workouts may be just as good if not better than sustained exercise.

The study published this week by the Royal Society was carried out by Dr Francesco Luciano of the University of Milan and compared long continuous walks to short intermittent walks. They had subjects walk on a treadmill and stair climber and found: “The time-averaged oxygen uptake and metabolic cost are greater for shorter than longer bouts,” in other words, there was more energy being used on the shorter bursts.

If it's on institutional mediuh, I do not believe it.

In fact, I suspect the opposite. Institutional mediuh are controlled by the powers-that-be; and today, those powers are Davos Transhumanists - who want to live forever in computer memory drives, and want us reduced to short-lived zombies.

Who pushed the non-vaccine that immediately attacked, not the bio-weapon virus, but the central nervous system.

I don't doubt exercise has benefits. Clean food has greater benefits. And turning off the digital nanny devices, even greater benefits.

Erline Dennis, 104, was a teacher for nearly 40 years. Though it’s been decades since she retired, Dennis still has an impact on her former students. Many of the kids she taught back then are now senior adults, according to Fox 8.

Born on July 2, 1920 in Winston-Salem, N.C., Dennis remains in her home state. She resides in High Point where she taught for many years, according to The High Point Enterprise.

Keeping family, friends and even those former students in her life is of extreme importance to Dennis, and it’s a skill she’s grateful that her friends remind her to strengthen.
