Exclusive-Syria retains 26 tons of gold reserves after Assad's fall - sources

By Timour Azhari

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - The vault of Syria's central bank holds nearly 26 tons of gold, the same amount it had at the start of its bloody civil war in 2011, even after the chaotic fall of Bashar al-Assad's despotic regime, four people familiar with the situation told Reuters.

But the country has only a small amount of foreign currency reserves in cash, the same people said.

Syria's gold reserves stood at 25.8 tons in June 2011, according to the World Gold Council, which cites the Central Bank of Syria as its data source. That is worth $2.2 billion at current market prices, according to Reuters calculations.

The fall of Bashar al-Assad is transforming not just Syria but also dynamics in the broader Middle East. What implications does this have for U.S. policy in the region? Should U.S. forces withdraw, or is there a continuing role for the American military in Syria? Melanie laments what appears to be the end of the road for Nippon Steel’s efforts to purchase U.S. Steel, Chris questions the panic around aircraft flying over New Jersey, and Zack grieves for South Korea after Yoon Suk Yeol’s disastrous martial law declaration.

excellent discussion - coverage you won't find in the MSM

According to the Russian Telegram Channel, General SVR; the Former President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad fell deathly ill at his Moscow Apartment on Sunday, with him beginning to “Cough Violently and Choke” after calling for Medical Assistance. Tests are claimed to have revealed that he had been Poisoned, with him having been treated at his Home, where he is now in Stable Condition.

Would not surprise me if Mossad or CIA managed to poison him as he was leaving Syria...

"Avid outdoorsman, aviator and photog"

Here - among others - you manage a thread about aviation and one about sailing.

You are GunsGold, right?
No.

Actually, I really don't manage any threads what-so-ever. Simply keep certain threads afloat if you get my drift.

Started the aviation thread because I follow several private pilots and enjoy their content. I wish I would have learned to fly may years ago but I didn't, so now I enjoy watching others fly.

As for the sailing thread, I spent about 10 years on the water and have a deep love for the sea and an admiration for those who make their living working on the world's oceans. Most of what I post there pertains to merchant seamen with the occasional sailing vid.

Edit to add: Spent a few mins reading some of his stuff. Not my cup of tea. But then again.............to each his own.

US tells UN: We cannot pay forever for Syria camps with Islamic State-linked prisoners

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -U.S. assistance for managing and securing camps in northeastern Syria with Islamic State-linked prisoners "cannot last forever," the acting U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Dorothy Shea, told the Security Council on Wednesday.

"The United States has shouldered too much of this burden for too long. Ultimately, the camps cannot remain a direct U.S. financial responsibility," she told the 15-member council, referencing the al-Hol and Roj displaced persons camps.
