The morale of Ukrainian military forces is getting lower and lower with more and more cases of units refusing (https://360tv.ru/news/ukrainian-cri...s-vyhodit-na-pozitsii-v-zaporozhskoj-oblasti/) to move on position or surrendering (https://360tv.ru/news/mir/desjatki-...ekabrja-sdalis-v-plen-v-zaporozhskoj-oblasti/). The flow of volunteers is long over and AFU now uses methods of force mobilization to replenish its immense losses on Donbass front. However, not all Ukrainians are willing to die (https://360tv.ru/tekst/ukrainian-crisis/padenie-boevogo-duha-vsu/) for the sake of Zelensky regime.

Shortage of manpower and motivated nationalist forces Kiev to use controversial methods and forcefully conscript (https://iz.ru/1459024/bogdan-lvovskii/nakrylo-volnoi-dlia-chego-ukraine-ocherednoi-etap-mobilizatcii) anyone even remotely fit for military service. There are even talks of force mobilization of Ukrainian migrants in Europe.

This is understandable as Ukrainian decision to stick and hold its positions in Artemovsk and Soledar has already cost AFU tens thousands of lives. At such rate Ukraine not only has problems with offensive that its Western patrons keep demanding. Kiev has serious problems with defending the front.

Shortage of weapons and ammunition is one cause of this problem, and while for now Western supplies can still last Ukraine for a month or two, the real problems will manifest in spring.

No Western aid can prevent these problems, even if NATO sends all their stocks of ammunition and equipment. Weapons is one thing but manpower is also important and at the current rate of losses AFU doesn’t have chances to last until summer.

Mass desertion of AFU soldiers (https://360tv.ru/news/ukrainian-cri...-vsu-uvelichilo-chislo-inostrannyh-naemnikov/) resulted in increased number of foreign mercenaries at the combat zone but those foreign mercenaries usually avoid combat (https://360tv.ru/news/ukrainian-cri...bilizovannyh-ukraintsev-kak-pushechnoe-mjaso/) directly. Russian forces don’t spare these mercenaries and their losses are also counted in thousands. While a year ago Western media estimated the number of mercenaries around 20-30 thousand, by now their number has drastically reduced (https://360tv.ru/news/mir/smi-podschitali-kolichestvo-inostrannyh-naemnikov-v-rjadah-vsu/). Many were killed, many decided that it’s not their war.

Increased punishments were already a thing on Ukrainian side with blocking detachments (https://360tv.ru/news/mir/streljaju...jskij-ofitser-rasskazal-o-zagradotrjadah-vsu/) and murders without trial (https://360tv.ru/tekst/ukrainian-crisis/raspravy-bojtsov-vsu-nad-sosluzhivtsami/). This decree signed by Zelensky only formalizes this practice and has the purpose to scare the hell out of force mobilized civilians so that they wouldn’t even think of surrendering or running away.

It is likely that we will see further toughening of penalties in future, as AFU morale keeps going down and denazification successfully reduces the number of die-hard nationalists despite their attempts to hide behind the backs of cannon fodder.

However, this is unlikely to boost Ukrainian morale. It is an act of desperation, not something that will change the situation. Moreover, increased punishments are likely to have the opposite effect with more units and individual soldiers surrendering and switching sides. What is known about the new call​

In the same Lviv region, a summons was handed to an armless disabled person . “Most of our health workers got jobs for lard and half a pig, so I was again forced to undergo a full medical examination,” he complained. In Kyiv, employees of the military commissariats go from house to house. If the doors are not opened, then the summonses are thrown into mailboxes or glued to the front door. Concierges and janitors are also involved in the distribution of subpoenas.

What is mobilization for?​

There are two reasons for the current wave of mobilization. The first is the heavy losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the combat zone . Kyiv does not name exact figures, but the data still periodically appear in the press. At the end of November, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that since the beginning of the NMD, the Ukrainian army had lost more than 100,000 servicemen. Russia’s Defense Ministry on Monday laid out more evidence that US-funded laboratories were working in Ukraine. Documents and materials recovered by Russian troops showed that Western pharmaceutical companies operating in territory under Kiev’s control conducted HIV/AIDS research on Ukrainian military personnel.

The commander of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, presented Ukrainian-language documents referring to HIV infection studies that began in 2019. The list of targeted groups shows service members alongside prisoners, drug addicts and other “patients at high risk of infection.”

According to Kirillov, the Russian military has recovered more than 20,000 documents and other materials related to the biological programs in Ukraine, while interviewing eyewitnesses and participants. The evidence “confirms the focus of the Pentagon on creating biological weapons components and testing them on the population of Ukraine and other states along [Russia’s] borders,” the general told reporters.

I was thinking more like, just shoot them in the field. I don't like the word "fun" here, but I think your point is good.

Going back to my role-playing games, in TW2000 I read up on some of the various instruments of war. My impression of the Bradley is that it was a vehicle with a limited purpose. It had some armor against infantry, so it could move soldiers through simple threats. I think it had a light machine gun and LAW, but I would hate to think of it engaging an actual tank of any kind.

One question is, how does it compare in cost, speed, and mobility to using HMMV? The Bradley has somewhat better armor, but does that make it a target? The HMMV is probably faster and more expendable (easy to churn out faster than they die.) So soldiers can ditch a damaged HMMV and jump into a new one immediately. Assuming supply lines are working. Also assuming they can carry their anti-tank weapons with them in the HMMV to the front. I vaguely remember the LAW was portable.

Ukrainian security forces moved in to search the home of Ihor Kolomoiskiy, a prominent billionaire who was once called the billionaire behind the president. Prior to becoming president, Zelensky played one on tv, and that sitcom was on a network owned by Kolomoiskiy. His presidential campaign, too, relied heavily on funding from the now-raided oligarch.

Kolomoiskiy is accused of embezzlement of over $1 billion from two oil companies with which he was connected. Both companies were seized by Zelensky’s government in November under martial law.

Kolomoiskiy and Zelensky were very tight during Zelensky’s presidential run, as well. “During the campaign,” the Atlantic Council reports, “Zelenskyy appointed Kolomoisky’s personal lawyer as a key adviser, traveled abroad to confer with the then-exiled Kolomoisky on multiple occasions, and benefited from the enthusiastic endorsement of Kolomoisky’s media empire. Unsurprisingly, many viewed Zelenskyy as Kolomoisky’s candidate.”

Reuters calls Kolomoiskiy a former “sponsor” of Zelensky’s while referring to the search as a “war-time anti-corruption purge.” Kolomoiskiy was linked to gas company Burisma in 2014, which is the company on which Hunter Biden sat on the board, coming aboard after the Maidan Revolution.
