Rand Paul threatens Senate reconciliation bill over "fake pay-for"

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) says he "won't vote for" a reconciliation package that is not fully paid for with real spending cuts, he told Axios.

Why it matters: A "no" from Paul would be an early reminder that even the Senate's safer bet for a quick win isn't a sure thing.

  • The House is mired in debate over how deep they should cut spending as part of a budget reconciliation package touching on border, defense and taxes.
  • The Senate is moving on its taxes-free plan this week.
Zoom in: Paul said the Senate package is expected to include $150 billion in new spending on the military and $175 billion for border security.

Senate holds a 'vote-a-rama' to advance $340 billion budget for Trump's agenda

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled Senate on Friday morning adopted a $340 billion budget blueprint designed to boost funding for President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement efforts, energy production and the military.

The mostly partly-line vote came just before 5 a.m. ET following an all-night “vote-a-rama,” where senators cast votes on 33 amendments over the course of a 10-hour span. The final vote was 52-48, with Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., as the lone Republican to join all 47 Democrats in voting against the budget resolution.

“Without this bill passing,” said Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., “there is no hope of getting money for the border.”

Negotiations to avert a shutdown sputter as disputes persist over DOGE cuts

WASHINGTON — Congress is careening toward a government shutdown in just 11 days as the discord between the two parties over funding talks grows, with no clear path to reaching a deal.

The government is set to run out of money at the end of next Friday, March 14. Republicans control the House and Senate, but they need Democratic support to pass a funding bill as it is subject to the Senate's 60-vote threshold.
