Rand Paul threatens Senate reconciliation bill over "fake pay-for"

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) says he "won't vote for" a reconciliation package that is not fully paid for with real spending cuts, he told Axios.

Why it matters: A "no" from Paul would be an early reminder that even the Senate's safer bet for a quick win isn't a sure thing.

  • The House is mired in debate over how deep they should cut spending as part of a budget reconciliation package touching on border, defense and taxes.
  • The Senate is moving on its taxes-free plan this week.
Zoom in: Paul said the Senate package is expected to include $150 billion in new spending on the military and $175 billion for border security.

Senate holds a 'vote-a-rama' to advance $340 billion budget for Trump's agenda

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled Senate on Friday morning adopted a $340 billion budget blueprint designed to boost funding for President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement efforts, energy production and the military.

The mostly partly-line vote came just before 5 a.m. ET following an all-night “vote-a-rama,” where senators cast votes on 33 amendments over the course of a 10-hour span. The final vote was 52-48, with Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., as the lone Republican to join all 47 Democrats in voting against the budget resolution.

“Without this bill passing,” said Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., “there is no hope of getting money for the border.”

Negotiations to avert a shutdown sputter as disputes persist over DOGE cuts

WASHINGTON — Congress is careening toward a government shutdown in just 11 days as the discord between the two parties over funding talks grows, with no clear path to reaching a deal.

The government is set to run out of money at the end of next Friday, March 14. Republicans control the House and Senate, but they need Democratic support to pass a funding bill as it is subject to the Senate's 60-vote threshold.

Rep. Thomas Massie Vows to Oppose New Spending Bill, Slams Republican Colleagues for Falling 'For the Lie'

A proposal to fund the federal government for the final half of this federal fiscal year has run into opposition.

The proposal was unveiled Saturday by the House Republican majority as a continuing resolution that largely funds the budget proposed by former President Joe Biden and approved in two stopgap budget bills last year, according to CNN.

Donald Trump's Attack on Thomas Massie Sparks Republican Pushback

President Donald Trump has received pushback from Republicans after calling for Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie to be voted out of office.

In a Monday post on Truth Social, the president said he would "lead the charge" in ousting Massie after the GOP lawmaker announced he would not support the Trump-backed government funding bill.

Why It Matters

House Republicans are slated to vote Tuesday on a continuing resolution that would fund the government at current levels through September and prevent a looming shutdown. Due to the GOP's razor-thin majority in the House, Massie's opposition could prove crucial. Speaker Mike Johnson can afford to lose only one Republican vote to pass the measure presuming all 215 Democrats vote "no."

Massie is the most principled Rep in the House and everyone knows it. He won't bend the knee just because Zod demands it and threatens him.

Trump's attack is just going to highlight Massie's objection to the CR for not cutting the spending to match DOGE's findings. I'm not even sure why this is happening. Trump claims to be supporting and backing DOGE. He should be pushing the GOP to codify DOGE's work (affirming and backing Massie's position).

'Never faced me!' Fed-up Trump aide vows to primary defiant Republican

A House Republican who has been a consistent thorn in President Donald Trump's side appeared to finally get under a fiery Trump aide's skin.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has repeatedly clashed with Trump, including supporting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president, accusing Trump of using "bullying tactics" and most recently publicly opposing a government funding measure that Trump urged Republicans to support.

All this comes despite Trump previously endorsing Massie in 2022.

Shut it down and see that nothing much changes which indicates where further cuts can be made.

Congress averts government shutdown after Senate passes stopgap funding bill

Congress averted a government shutdown Friday just hours before the funding deadline, after the Senate approved a House-passed spending bill that exposed deep rifts within the Democratic Party.

The stopgap measure to fund the government into the fall now heads to the desk of President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.

Senate Democrats came under intense pressure to oppose the Trump-backed bill, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and others are now facing backlash after they helped to clear a path for its passage.

The rising tensions within the party spilled into public view as lawmakers raced toward a shutdown that would have had far-reaching consequences across the federal government – highlighting the struggle Democrats face in attempting to counter Trump and the Republican monopoly on power in Washington.

Maybe this is the beginning of some of the Democrats working with the Republicans to fix the mess we are in?

'I rebuke you in the name of Jesus': GOP rep explodes at Johnson in closed-door meeting

NOTUS is reporting that emotions are running high in Republican meetings over a GOP budget threatening to add up to $5.8 trillion to the nation’s deficit and potentially raise the nation’s debt to 214% of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2054

Republicans typically run on lowering national debt and the deficit under Democratic administrations, and a few of them are apparently having a difficult time switching gears for President Donald Trump, who also significantly raised the deficit under his last administration.
