  • An increasing incidence of climate-driven extreme weather events is taking its toll on the world’s major shipping routes, and analysts fear that the onset of El Niño could make matters even worse.
  • Low water levels on the critically important Panama Canal have prompted the Central American country to reduce the number of vessels that pass through the key global trade route.
  • Danish shipping giant Maersk said it had been “largely unaffected” by the Panama Canal delays, although it warned that climate risks to major shipping routes were becoming more prevalent with potentially severe impacts.

Evergreen’s new containership Ever Max completed the U.S. portion of her maiden voyage setting new records including becoming the largest containership to dock at Baltimore’s Seagrit Marine Terminal. Port officials hailed her arrival as part of their ongoing efforts over the past few years to expand the port’s capacity.

They reported that the 1,200-foot Ever Max (160,000 dwt) arrived with a capacity of 15,432 TEU topping the previous record also held by Evergreen with the Triton, which arrived in 2019 with a capacity of 14,424 TEU. Before that, the Gunde Maersk arrived in 2018 with a capacity of 11,000 TEU setting the record.

Shipping is extremely cyclical. Booms like the one experienced by container shipping in 2021-2022 are very rare. For many longtime shipowners and operators, the model has been: Take a large pile of your chips off the table when returns go stratospheric. Keep enough cash in the business to stay in the game until the next jackpot, but don’t blow your boom-time gains after the market turns. Pocket your winnings. Buy a yacht.

This model of multi-cycle wealth creation has long been a mainstay of private tanker and dry bulk shipowning families. The container shipping industry — at least, a portion of it — has followed their lead.

Container shipping lines have used COVID-era windfalls to pay down debt, invest in fuel-efficient newbuildings and broaden their company portfolios. But they’ve also paid out tens of billions in dividends, enriching shareholders with pandemic profits — with some shipping lines doling out particularly large portions of their recent gains.

HOUSTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Top U.S. energy companies last year paid out more of their earnings to shareholders than they invested in new oil and gas fields for the first time, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The outlook for stronger energy prices has not changed the focus on investor returns from the U.S. industry, according to the report's authors, Ernst & Young LLP. U.S. energy companies have been focused on regaining favor with investors after years of overspending on production growth hurt returns and put them in the doghouse.

Surprise? This has been talked about for quite a few months, I don't know why they would be surprised it was on the table.

I mean... really...

... maybe 12 months ago it was a surprise.
