Bitcoin Vs. Gold: Which Will Beat Inflation?

Suddenly inflation worries are on the table again. That’s a bullish sign for putative inflation hedges like gold and Bitcoin—although worried investors shouldn’t overlook a simpler solution: stocks.

While the Federal Reserve lowered the benchmark federal-funds rate for the third time this year on Wednesday, policymakers walked back rate-cut expectations for 2025, triggering worries up and down Wall Street and sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average down more than 1,000 points. At issue: Economic growth remains strong and inflation stubbornly high. Inflation fears are a key reason 10-year Treasury yields spiked, despite the cut to short-term rates.

Stocks rally as investors cheer US inflation relief

  • Euro sags, Europe stocks down; S&P futures firm 0.4%
  • Futures imply two Fed rate cuts in 2025
  • Dollar remains strong on high bond yields
LONDON/SYDNEY, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Global shares were boosted on Monday by a U.S. inflation reading offering some hope for further policy easing next year, along with relief that Washington had averted a government shutdown.

After a recent central bank decisions bonanza, this week only has the minutes of a few of those meetings, while there are no Federal Reserve speeches and U.S. data is secondary.

The main market themes remain largely the same, with the dollar underpinned by a relatively strong economy and higher bond yields, which in turn is a burden for commodities and gold.

Pirates of Puntland - BBC Africa

Dec 23, 2024 #somalipirates #puntland

At its peak, the cost of Somali piracy to the global economy was around $7 billion, which included hundreds of millions of dollars in ransoms. That was just over a decade ago. Since then, international security patrols in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean shipping lane all but eliminated Somali piracy. But those efforts have been stretched over the last year as Houthi rebels in Yemen started attacking ships from the other side of the Gulf of Aden. And in recent months, there’s been a resurgence of piracy off the coast of the autonomous Somali region of Puntland. BBC Africa travelled there to speak exclusively with some of the pirates themselves.
