Russian, Chinese Cooperation in Arctic A Growing Concern, Says CJCS Brown​

KEFLAVIK, ICELAND – Growing cooperation between China and Russia is a major concern for the U.S. and its Arctic allies, the U.S. military’s top officer told USNI News on Wednesday.

Beijing and Moscow’s joint operations in the High North have raised concerns with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown ahead of a trip to Iceland this week to attend the Arctic Chiefs of Defense Conference.

Strategic Shifts Require Reshaping the U.S. Nuclear Arsenal​

In his July 2023 Proceedings article “Time to Recalibrate: The Navy Needs Tactical Nuclear Weapons . . . Again,” Commander Paul Giarra suggested that, given Russia and China’s recent actions, the Navy should reconsider its decision to “voluntarily give up tactical nuclear weapons at sea.”1 While the Navy—and the Department of Defense (DoD) as a whole—should evaluate this recommendation, it first must answer a more basic question: Does the U.S. nuclear arsenal meet the requirements of today’s strategic environment?

An analysis of the five published Nuclear Posture Reviews reveals that the assumptions underlying the nuclear arsenal’s configuration from the end of the Cold War to the mid-2010s are misaligned with the evolving nature of great power competition. The United States must recalibrate its nuclear deterrence posture and align the stockpile to address the realities of the current threat environment.

Grand Theft Otto - Skorzeny & 'The Spider' Network​

Otto Skorzeny was Hitler's commando extraordinaire - a man who pulled off some of the most daring raids of WWII. His life postwar was equally intriguing, becoming an international arms dealer and military advisor. However, many don't know that he founded a shadowy organisation called 'Die Spinne' or 'The Spider' in 1948 devoted to helping SS men to escape from justice. It was financed by a huge amount of cash that Skorzeny had received at war's due to an SS raid on the Reichsbank in embattled Berlin.

U.S. Navy: American Spy Ships​

Almost from the start of the Cold War in 1945 the United States employed surface ships and submarines with special equipment and personnel embarked to collect intelligence against the Soviet Union and China. It subsequently expanded its activities to look at Third World nations that were Soviet or Chinese allies or left-leaning neutral states.

But following the experiences of the Soviet Union led U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and Navy officials to consider specialized ships for intelligence collection.

Specialized spy ships were initiated in the 1950s, when the Soviet Union employed modified trawlers to collect intelligence in overseas areas and to observe Western naval operations. Although often depicted in the Western press as "disguised," these ships were readily identifiable: All were Soviet Navy manned and were fitted with extensive electronic antennas, and some were armed. Soviet fishing craft as well as merchant ships undoubtedly collected intelligence as opportunities permitted, sometimes with intelligence officers embarked, but most Soviet intelligence ships—designated AGIs by Western intelligence—were built on trawler hulls. Their large, insulated cargo holds were readily adaptable to electronic equipment bays and crew berthing spaces. Trawler hulls also provided long endurance, had good seakeeping qualities, and were in series production.

NATO’s Arctic Marines – Journey through the High North​

NATO’s marines are among the toughest troops in the Alliance. But in the Arctic, tough isn’t enough – marines must be unusually skilled and resilient to survive the freezing temperatures and rugged landscape.

In early 2024, marine forces from several NATO Allies got to test their mettle against the High North, putting their cold weather lessons into practice while learning new tactics from their counterparts during exercise Steadfast Defender 24. Finnish, Italian and Swedish marines worked together to stage amphibious raids on the coast of Norway, while US marines improved their survival skills inland, learning what their Nordic Allies already know: when it comes to deep snow, skis are the only way to get around.

The exercise was particularly poignant for Finland and Sweden, NATO’s two newest members. Finland joined in 2023, while Sweden joined in the midst of the exercise, with many Swedish troops holding impromptu celebrations to mark their accession.

Marines need to be prepared to come ashore and defend Allied territory, no matter the time, place or climate. This short documentary follows the marines during Steadfast Defender, showing that they’re more than capable of braving the elements to fulfil their mandate.

VIDEO: 2 Chinese Aircraft Carriers Drill Together for the First Time in South China Sea​

Two People’s Liberation Army Navy aircraft carriers exercised together for the first time in the South China Sea, the People’s Liberation Army reported.

According to photos released by the PLA, Carriers CNS Liaoning (16) and CNS Shandong (17) drilled together, leading the formation with 12 carrier-based J-15 fighters flying overhead and 11 PLAN surface ships.

In a Thursday press conference, Snr. Col. Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, stated that the dual-carrier drill was a part of the PLAN’s annual training plan and aimed at enhancing the combat capability of the PLAN’s carrier strike groups (CSGs).
