fwiw (dyodd) I'm seeing more and more self checkout counters, not less.

The state of self-checkout at major retail stores

Retailers including Walmart, Target and Dollar General have been removing locations where self-checkout is available or making them available only to shoppers with limited items.

These changes could prompt consumers to alter the way they use payment cards, even if the changes are subtle. Target, for example, is constraining some self-checkouts to 10 items or fewer, thus limiting ticket sizes from shoppers who prefer this checkout method.

How AI And Automation Are Taking Over Grocery Stores And Drive-Thru Lanes

Jul 15, 2024 #CNBC

From fully autonomous fast-food chains to smart carts lining grocery store parking lots, the way the food industry looks is changing due to massive investment in AI technology. The American consumer is starting to pull back on spending and rising food and labor costs are causing the food industry to invest more into automation to lower labor costs and improve sales, in order to stay competitive and take advantage of shifting consumer taste.

I was forced to stop at Taco Bell the other day.
Then the people inside forced me to use their stupid kiosk to order.

Said their registers were down.
....but the the dumb kiosk kept locking up and not working right.

Asked 'em about it and they suggested trying the other one.

What a pain in the ass!

Already had most of the stuff ordered on the first one and then had to start all over on the second one. Again, what a f'ing pain in ass those things are!

Seriously. If that's how it happened (and not a longer story, involving friends or family, etc) the thing to do is go to a major grocer's outlet - Albertson's or Safeway or Kroger or Giant Eagle...whatever's in your area. They ALL have deli counters and prepared items.

It's not the healthiest way to eat but LOADS healthier than Taco Hell, or the Fallen Arches, etc, ad nauseum. You'll find shorter lines, and in smaller towns, you'll find Americans working behind the counter. Often mature Americans, some of whom actually like kitchen work.

Yea, I know. I was with other people who wanted to stop there. Hence, I was forced to stop there too. Lol

Have noticed Walmart will only let you have 15 items or less at self-checkout and have increased the number of human cashiers in the place I use. On a different note, they keep increasing the stuff they keep locked up. Can't stand that.

Why Self-Checkout Is No Longer Profitable for Retailers

Dec 31, 2024 #ShaunR

Self-checkout stations were once a retail innovation, promising cost savings, shorter lines, and a smoother shopping experience. But today, retailers are rethinking their strategies as these machines reveal hidden costs and operational issues. From high installation and maintenance expenses to rising theft rates and frustrated customers, self-checkouts have brought unexpected challenges. This video dives into why self-checkout may no longer be as profitable as once believed, exploring if this technology will evolve or fade away in favor of human interaction.

Self checkouts are constantly being used by people who want to skip paying for a few( or more) items. This is leading to cops making arrests....you can also switch price tags much more easily if you wish. Whatever the stores saved on labor, they lost on theft.

Does anyone remember the automates where everything was behind a door, you picked your food and went to the cashier and paid....than ate at a table.1736347548127.jpeg

Interesting.

...that, self-checkout is being panned...by an AI Eww Toob vid.

I have to snicker, at how their efforts to save a few nickels, has turned into a liability - with software-licensing, technological glitches and failure, and, of course, how, people dealing with corporate merchants contemptuous of them, feel less inhibited to STEAL.

I don't think they're going away, and I don't think we'll see more checkout lanes. Merchants are eager to take in money but not so fast to hire additional staff. The local WinCo warehouse grocery, has 16 checkout lanes - seldom are more than three open, even when the lines are long. We're talking, 30-minute waits. That's nice when the ice cream is melting.

Same store has two self-serve checkout lanes. Often with numerous machines out of order. And this is a GOOD store, compared to others in the area.

The other thing people like is how you can dump your coin jar into the machine and get rid of your spare change....

Have you tried that? It's easier to jam up a coin receptacle in one of those, than it is to trigger a Snowflake.

Not just one store - about five that I've used, and over time. Walmart has, in the years they've had Self Serve, changed/upgraded their scanners twice. I mean, removal of them all and put in different models.

They still choke on change. They all do.

I don't have the change problem - I get tired of pocket-loads, and of dumping the contents on the counter for later sorting, day after day. So, if I get a price, $47.64...I dig deep. Self-serve or stupefied hoo-mun, I pull out the 64 cents, along with the century note.

That does confuse some Woked-up hoo-munnz. Fortunately, they have machines to do logic and counting for them.
