Does this computer need to be a fancy high-end system? I have a couple workstations here that are no longer being used, at least most of the time. Wondering if they would be decent enough to bother installing the software.

From the link in post #6:
The minimum hardware requirements are:

Internet speed: 5Mbps+ up and down
CPU: 4 cores or more
Memory: 16 GBytes or more
Free hard drive space: 64GB or more, best with 256GB+ available disk space, which is needed for training large deep learning models.
GPU (optional): Nvidia GPUs with CUDA enabled. CUDA-enabled GPU can greatly accelerate AI tasks.

I have the Edge Node running on a laptop that does not have a fancy GPU or multiple CPU cores and it runs fine (thought the rewards for the new 3D jobs are half of what my CUDA enabled NVIDIA GPU machine is earning). If you are using Windows, you need Windows 10 or 11 IIRC. Basically, if you can install the software and run it, you are good to go. Doesn't hurt to try.

I don't know if this new 3D job queue is hitting on a high rate that will settle down later, but right now, the Edge Node software is earning more TFUEL than at any point in the previous 2 months. It's worth giving it a shot right now IMO.

We’re excited to announce the launch of new 3D rendering jobs for Theta edge nodes on the Windows platform. These new rendering jobs leverage Blender, the most popular open-source 3D modeling and animation technology in the world, with over 14 million downloads in 2020 alone and growing rapidly. The mission of the Blender Foundation, an independent public benefit organization, is to empower anyone to create 3D computer generated CG content, with free access to technical and creative production resources.

As part of today’s Windows software update to Edge Node v4.6.2, it will automatically download and install the latest Windows Blender binary to facilitate the entire 3D development pipeline from modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking. ...

3rd payout on my Theta stake just hit. This one took a little over a week from the last one. So far from the moment of staking, my payouts have run 3 days,, 3days, 10 days. Average seems to be around 5 days apart so far. It's a weird system with unpredictable payouts.

Just got another payout - 2 days after the last one.

Following the twitter conversation I had with ThetaNext (mentioned two posts up), I staked 10K TFUEL to the Edge Node I have running on the CUDA enabled GPU computer. ThetaNext wasn't kidding. That machine is getting a lot more jobs now and the payouts for each job are also higher.

This morning, I also received my first TFUEL payout from the TFUEL stake. I'll try to calculate an estimated APY/ROI for the stake after I get a bit more data.

Just finished watching/participating in Theta's AMA. They talked about a bunch of things and demo'd a pretty cool new tech. I took the following notes:
  • Edgenode for Android in weeks - Cell phones, TVs, tablets, etc. will be able to download a Theta EdgeNode app and complete jobs for the network
  • Sketch to 3D GenAI coming - This was cool. A tool to aid in 3D modeling can take any image (even one generated by another AI) and build a 3D model out of it that can then be fed into 3D modeling software (or printed to a 3D printer!)
  • Llama AI text to image enhanced? - I didn't catch exactly what they said on this one, but it sounded like another AI tool is in the works
  • Currently clients pay Theta Labs for cloud computing (with USD). In the future they will pay the system directly (and with TFUEL or other tokens)
  • Dialogue ongoing with Coinbase to get listed - It was clear that they were not at liberty to talk much on this subject
  • Working with Ledger - solution coming in the Fall for managing Theta and related tokens with Ledger devices
  • Edge Caching was folded into video streaming system, Edge Cache section in the Edge Node software to be removed

I forgot to make a note of it as it was rather quick comment and I didn't really understand the significance of it at the time, but they also mentioned in the AMA that they are working with Amazon Web Service now. I just saw this tweet that puts the comment in perspective:

This looks interesting (built on Theta):

It's a decentralized file storage system that encrypts files and lets you control access (who can view). Might be useful for securing passwords or seed phrases for easy access anywhere you have internet.

When she talks about the cell phones at around the 1:12 mark, she is talking about Theta.

Theta devs continue building out use cases for the Theta Cloud service:

I'm getting a Fiber line at home and have a few unused desktops here. I think I will try to put a few to use and install the edge node. Then, maybe, gonna try to figure out how to get some Theta.

to be clear, you don't need any THETA to run an Edge Node. It's actually better to get 10K TFUEL to make your Edge Node an Elite Edge Node - especially if your Edge Node computer has a CUDA enabled NVidia GPU.

What exactly would the Theta token do then in this system? Is there a use for the Theta? Not quite sure how that works. Or is it more like an ownership of the network thing.

THETA is the "governance" token. Right now, that doesn't really mean much as Theta Labs is running the show. In the future, they might transition to a "DAO":
A decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) is an emerging form of legal structure that has no central governing body and whose members share a common goal to act in the best interest of the entity. Popularized through cryptocurrency enthusiasts and blockchain technology, DAOs are used to make decisions in a bottom-up management approach.

But they aren't there yet. Right now, THETA can be staked against Guardian Nodes to earn TFUEL. When staking the THETA, you make a choice on which Guardian Node you want to apply your stake and I assume that affects the rewards that the Guardian Node operator is earning, so they want to be good actors to attract more folks like you and me to stake our THETA with them. You need a minimum of 1,000 THETA to begin staking. Owning less than 1,000 THETA is somewhat pointless unless you just want to trade the THETA price volatility (which is less volatile than a lot of other crypto tokens).

You can get a Theta wallet here:

Then use a trading platform like simpleswap:

to acquire THETA to your wallet. Once you have the THETA, you can stake it (using the web based wallet) to earn TFUEL. This can all be done without running an Edge Node.

Separately, you can just install the Edge Node software on any compatible computer and it will create a new, unique wallet for you and start earning TFUEL as it completes jobs. The Edge Node software and the THETA tokens are two separate things (that both can end up earning TFUEL for you).

Stream is active now on https://theta.tv/

Mitch says they have multi-year contract for first customer (from academia) for Theta Cloud signed already.

I installed Theta from the link supplied in post#6 in this thread.
About 20 years ago the SETI institue (Search for exterestial intelligence) had a method of sharing time with internet connected PC's. As a participant your computing power was a donation, no reward like this Theta thing.

My Theta computer ran one job. I will leave it on overnight as I expect online reliability/availability is key to being assigned jobs.

I have many questions but will hold off and see what develops, before I waste people's time. I watched the "What is Theta" -

The woman in the video struck me as "Car Salesman" talking 90 miles an hour with a sales pitch and no education benefit.

My machine running Theta does have a NVDIA CUDA GPU. I have no idea how to tell if the video accelerator is being used.

Thanks
Steve

BTW a guy in my HAM radio club was big on BITCOIN when the price was $200. I decided I had better things to do then throw money away.

I'm also fairly certain that I was gifted a one BITCOIN for opening a wallet before that. The wallet was tied to my work laptop and was lost back in 2012.

When you get a (Blender) 3D Rendering job, you can refer to the table in post #47 to verify whether or not your Edge Node is using the Nvidia CUDA or not.

For comparison, this is what one of my Elite Edge Nodes looks like right now:

The (Blender) 3D Rendering jobs come and go in waves. There weren't any in the timeframe captured by that screenshot.

Here's a screenshot with some (Blender) 3D Rendering jobs:

Interesting Pmbug. I installed CUDA last year for my astronomy work, it sped up the video processes dramatically. However when I went to install CUDA via the formal NVIDIA process it failed for some reason. Probably related to all the manual installation that were performed prior. I know my NVDIA GPU is on the approved list.
I will be interested to see if any of the 3D rendering job are performed.

Thanks
Steve

If the CUDA installation failed, you are probably needing to install the Visual Studio components as mentioned in the step by step guide (which really should instruct folks to install the Visual Studio first!). The other possibility is that the driver for your Nvidia card is old and needs to be updated in order to work with the latest CUDA software.

Pmbug, I have several X64 laptops related to HAM radio functions that sit around doing very little. Can I employ these machines also?

I know you had a post about multiple Theta instances not working properly. Has this been worked out?

Edit: my electric bill is virtually free due to the solar panels.

If they meet the minimum specs, yes. Are they running Windows 10 or 11? Or are they Linux?

Yes, Theta Support assured me that running multiple Edge Nodes on the same internet connection was totally fine. The issue I had was a mistake on their end that was quickly resolved and has not repeated.

They should work fine then. If the software installs, you are good.

The only real issue is whether they are cost effective. If you are running the machines all the time anyway, there is no extra cost to you. If you set them up and keep them running just for the Edge Node, you are spending some electricity that you weren't before and then you need to consider the rate or return and such.

I run this one all day everyday so my cat has a nice warm surface to lay on LOL. My electric is free due to the solar panels.

I don't think I've mentioned this previously in this thread, but if you are running multiple Edge Nodes, you can use this handy dashboard developed by ThetaNext (a 3rd party with no official connection to Theta Labs/Network) to track your TFUEL earnings across all your Edge Nodes:

https://user.thetanext.io/

It's a lot more helpful if you stake TFUEL on your Edge Nodes to make them Elite Edge Nodes.
