Vogues - Magic Town Live at Kennywood

May 5, 2008

From the comments below the vid on youtube:
The original Vogues all worked at Westinghouse Electric in Turtle Creek. One of the group, Bill, was a distant cousin of mine. They were called The Val-Airs in the 50's, as I heard it and named themselves The Vogues after The Vogue Terrace in Monroeville, Pa. where they were appearing and were discovered by Elmer Willet. He managed them and hooked them up with Nick Cencci, a record producer in Pittsburgh.

TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN

LYRICS:
SUCKER PUNCH SOMEBODY ON A SIDEWALK
CAR JACK AN OLD LADY AT A RED LIGHT
PULL A GUN ON THE OWNER OF A LIQUOR STORE
YA THINK IT’S COOL WELL ACT A FOOL IF YA LIKE
CUSS OUT A COP SPIT IN HIS FACE
STOMP ON THE FLAG AND LIGHT IT UP
YEAH YA THINK YOU’RE TOUGH

WELL TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN
SEE HOW FAR YA MAKE IT DOWN THE ROAD
‘ROUND HERE WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN
YOU CROSS THAT LINE IT WON’T TAKE LONG
FOR YOU TO FIND OUTI RECOMMEND YOU DON’T
TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN

GOT A GUN THAT MY GRANDDAD GAVE ME
THEY SAY ONE DAY THEY’RE GONNA ROUND UP
WELL THAT SHIT MIGHT FLY IN THE CITY GOOD LUCK

TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN
SEE HOW FAR YOU MAKE IT DOWN THE ROAD
‘ROUND HERE WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN
YOU CROSS THAT LINE IT WON’T TAKE LONG
FOR YOU TO FIND OUTI RECOMMEND YOU DON’T
TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN

FULL OF GOOD OL BOYS, RAISED UP RIGHT
IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A FIGHT
TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN
TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN
TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN
SEE HOW FAR YOU MAKE IT DOWN THE ROAD
‘ROUND HERE WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN
YOU CROSS THAT LINE IT WON’T TAKE LONG
FOR YOU TO FIND OUT
I RECOMMEND YOU DON’T

These last 2 were great Cisco!

I'm a huge Little Charlie fan. Charles Baty passed away in 2020, but he and the Nightcats put out a lot of CDs and I own them all. Little Charlie was a guitar player's guitar player. I know half a dozen of his shuffles by heart and play them all the time.

Here's one by the great Duke Robillard. I know some of his songs as well and am currently working on this one called "Cookin'". It's a shuffle too, but at 5 minutes and 36 seconds, it's a long one. I was fortunate to find the sheet music for it.

Read today, CMT banned this one.

They never quit. It's time for decent people to start quitting all this mAss Mediuh. Everything from the fish-wrap paper, to your Smartphone carrier...all of them want to show how Woke they are, and how you're NOT ALLOWED to think differently. Never heard the song but wanted to see why it was banned.

From the link:

“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song … and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous,” he wrote. “There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it- and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage -and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music- this one goes too far.”

On social media some users were offended by the lyrics, especially since Aldean was performing onstage at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas in 2017 when a shooter opened fire and killed 60 concertgoers and injured hundreds more. In his tweet, the Grammy-nominated star referenced the tragedy: “NO ONE, including me, wants to continue to see senseless headlines or families ripped apart.”
